The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Marathon man on Monday for a DUI after he lost control of his vehicle while “showing off” and hit a utility pole.

Geno Sebastiano Genco, 18, was charged with reckless driving, DUI with property damage and DUI with a blood alcohol level over .15.

Around 3:42 a.m., an MCSO deputy responded to a report of an accident with injuries on Sombrero Boulevard in Marathon. On arrival, the deputy saw a truck with extensive damage to its passenger side, as well as a damaged utility pole and mailbox.

According to the report, the deputy met with Genco and a passenger who was riding with him. Both stated they were fine, and Genco admitted to being the driver. Genco explained that he was “showing off” by spinning his tires and fish tailing his vehicle, but that he lost control and the passenger side of his truck hit the utility pole. Genco estimated he was traveling 40 mph when the collision occurred. The passenger also verified this narrative.

Florida Keys Electrical Cooperative representatives arrived on scene to evaluate the damage, which they estimated to be $12,000. Furthermore, the deputy estimated the vehicle’s damage to be $5,000 and $100 for the mailbox.

The deputy also noticed signs of intoxication in Genco, leading him to conduct a DUI investigation. Genco ultimately failed the field sobriety test, and the deputy transported him to the Marathon DUI room. There, Genco’s breath samples showed a blood-alcohol level of 0.161.

Genco was transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held without bail.

Information in the Crime Report is obtained from reports provided by area law enforcement agencies.
