After telling a cashier that he was drunk and then going back to his vehicle, a Marathon man was arrested for DUI on Tuesday.

Rodger Eric Evans, 39, was charged with DUI and resisting an officer by refusing to sign a citation.

Around 9:05 p.m., deputies responded to the Winn-Dixie on Big Pine Key after receiving reports of a reckless driver. The man, later identified as Evans, reportedly was inside the store and appeared to be so intoxicated he could barely stand. According to the report, he informed the cashier that he was intoxicated, and then went back to his vehicle.

When deputies arrived on scene, Evans was backing his vehicle out of his parking spot. According to the report, he stopped multiple times and moved forward multiple times, at one point almost hitting another parked vehicle.

After stopping Evans, deputies asked him if he was OK, and Evans spontaneously admitted to being drunk. Following this, deputies asked to perform a field sobriety test, but Evans refused. Deputies transported him to the Key West DUI room to conduct a breath test, but Evans refused again.

A criminal history of Evans showed he was convicted of DUI in Texas in 2003 and again in Florida in 2006.

Deputies then issued a citation to Evans, but he refused to sign this as well. He was charged and placed into the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held on a $20,000 bond.

Information in the Crime Report is obtained from reports provided by area law enforcement agencies.
