A Key West woman was arrested on Tuesday after a Key West Police Department officer determined that she stole a lost purse and used a credit card to purchase clothes online.
Courtney Leigh Wilson, 32, was charged with theft of a lost credit card, two counts of petit theft, illegal use of a credit card and two counts of fraud.
On Oct. 6, the victim reported a fraudulent charge on her credit card to KWPD. She stated she lost her wallet on Sept. 29 in the downtown area, where she only visited Willie T’s and Mary Ellen’s. Several days later she noticed the fraudulent charge from Z Supply, a clothing vendor, for a total amount of $242. A review of the charge revealed an email used in the order, which contained the name “Courtney Wilson.” The victim stated she researched the name and discovered that Wilson was a bartender at Mary Ellen’s.
Officers met with Wilson, who stated she used a random credit card on the counter at her residence, which she thought belonged to one of her roommate’s visitors. She also stated she did not take a wallet that night, and even said she believed the victim returned to the bar and said that the wallet in question wasn’t hers.
According to the report, officers reviewed the surveillance footage of Mary Ellen’s that night, and Wilson can be seen placing a wallet matching the victim’s in her own purse. Furthermore, the order placed with Z Supply was made with Wilson’s own email and address. Wilson was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center. She was released the following day.
