A Hobe Sound, Florida woman was arrested on Tuesday for DUI after she was found sleeping in her running vehicle.

Kelsi Rae Schlemmer, 28, was charged with DUI — 3rd offense within 10 years.

Around 8:20 p.m., Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Publix in Islamorada after a manager reported a woman was slumped over in the driver’s seat of a vehicle in the parking lot. Deputies arrived and attempted to wake up the woman, but they were initially unable to rouse her, according to the report.

The driver, identified as Schlemmer, eventually woke up and deputies had her exit the vehicle. She stated she was on her way home with her friend, although no one else was present, and deputies noticed several signs of intoxication as she spoke. According to the report, Schlemmer had red eyes, a lack of coherency and a strong odor of alcohol about her.

Deputies had Schlemmer perform field sobriety exercises, but she failed each component of the test. They then arrested her and transported her to the DUI room in Tavernier. There, Schlemmer reportedly refused to submit a breath sample. A records check revealed Schlemmer had been charged with DUI three times prior and had been convicted on two of the charges.

Schlemmer was arrested and transported to the Plantation Key jail, but was released the following day.

Information in the Crime Report is obtained from reports provided by area law enforcement agencies.
