A Marathon woman was arrested Thursday for selling oxycontin following an undercover operation conducted by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Maragert Jean Suarez, 38, was charged with two counts of selling an opium derivative within 1,000 feet of a church and two counts usage of a two-way communication device to facilitate a felony. She was later charged with possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, possession of paraphernalia and possession of cocaine.
Two undercover buy operations, conducted on April 12 and April 16, led to Suarez’s arrest. In both cases, Sheriff’s Office detectives used a confidential informant to purchase prescription oxycontin pills from Suarez, according to the police report.
In each purchase, the informant would meet with Suarez in Marathon, where they would buy the pills. Both sales took place within 1,000 feet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Marathon. The first purchase was six 30 mg Oxycontin pills for $210, and the second purchase was two pills for $80.
Oxycontin is a schedule II narcotic and one of the main contributing prescription pills in the ongoing national opioid crisis, according to the National Institute for Drug Abuse.
The reports regarding the cocaine and paraphernalia charges were not immediately available.
Suarez was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where she was being held on a bond of $145,000.
