A Big Coppitt Key woman was arrested on a warrant Friday after investigators allege she stole jewelry from a friend’s mother.
Trisha Monique Suarez, 29, was charged with grand theft and violation of probation.
Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a home in Marathon after the homeowner filed a report that two women stole approximately $3,200 worth of jewelry from the home. The victim’s son reportedly invited the two women, one of whom was Suarez, to the house on April 26. The following morning, the victim discovered her jewelry drawer was open and numerous items were missing.
The son of the victim said he allowed Suarez and the other woman inside the house while he changed clothes. One of the women said she needed a drink and was left unattended. The son later dropped off the women and went to work in Key West. After his mother confronted him about the missing jewelry, the son tried to contact the two women. Suarez denied taking anything, but the second woman told the son that Suarez had the jewelry. The woman was even able to identify what type of jewelry had been stolen, according to the report.
The son later talked to Suarez’s aunt, who confirmed both women were involved in taking the jewelry.
Deputies secured a warrant for Suarez on May 21 and arrested her on Friday. She was booked into the Monroe County Detention Center, where she was being held on a bond of $75,000.
