Marathon man pulls knife in altercation

A Marathon man was arrested on Sunday after he reportedly pulled out a pocket knife while trying to fight another man he passed on the street.

Daniel Christopher Gomez, 28, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.

Around 10:22 p.m., Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call at the Tom Thumb Food Stores near 26th Street, oceanside, in Marathon. The deputies met with the victim, who pointed out Gomez and stated he pulled out a pocket knife while threatening to fight him, according to the report.

Deputies met with Gomez and asked him if he had any weapons, and Gomez said he had a knife on him. Gomez elaborated on the situation, and stated the victim had been bothering him all day. He then stated the victim walked up to him and “asked him to fight.”

However, the victim stated Gomez had been bothering him for several days. He said that Gomez spotted him and crossed the street to confront him, where he reportedly said “Let’s fight.” At that point, the victim stated Gomez pulled out an object from his pocket and said “I got a knife.” According to the report, the victim feared for his life, so he ran to the nearby Tom Thumb and called 911.

Gomez admitted to pulling a knife on the victim, but continued to state it was the victim who started the altercation. The victim was able to provide a matching description of the knife.

Gomez was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held on a $25,000 bond.

Liquid evidence leads to hit-and-run arrest

A Key West man was arrested on Monday after he allegedly crashed into several trash cans, damaged another vehicle and then left a trail of liquid that led from the scene of the crash to where he parked his car several blocks away.

Reinier Caldentey Abrines, 34, was charged with reckless driving and leaving the scene of a crash.

Key West Police Department officers responded to the corner of Simonton and Eaton streets after receiving reports of a suspicious incident. At the scene, officers discovered seven damaged trash cans scattered across the roadway, with one of the cans pinned underneath a nearby Ford Mustang. The Ford had damage to the front bumper and the driver’s side mirror was torn off, according to the report. Officers estimated the total damage to the car and trash cans was approximately $10,000.

While examining the scene, officers noted that a trail of liquid lead away from the Ford back toward Simonton Street. Officers began to follow the liquid, with the trail ending on Elizabeth and Dey streets near a parked Kia Forte. Upon closer inspection, the Kia had significant damage to the front and driver’s side.

A records check revealed the Kia belonged to Abrines, and the officers went to his listed address to make contact with him, according to the report. Once they arrived, they found Abrines asleep next to his front door. When asked how he got home, Abrines reportedly said he fell asleep while driving his vehicle, and then later said he walked home.

Abrines was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held on a bond of $50,000.

Driver faces child abuse charges following chase

A 45-year-old Key West woman driving a sport utility vehicle with three children inside and refusing to stop for Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies and other law enforcement officers was arrested Tuesday afternoon after the SUV’s tires were spiked on U.S. 1.

Shauna Coleen Coulson was charged with fleeing and eluding and three counts of child abuse.

The children — ages 7, 11 and 12 — were not injured and turned over to the care of the Department of Children and Families.

Multiple motorists on U.S. 1 began calling 911 about 12:15 p.m. to report a northbound silver Kia SUV that was driving erratically on U.S. 1 in Marathon. The SUV was reportedly driving into oncoming traffic and had on its flashing yellow lights. Items such as a bag were also reportedly seen being thrown from the SUV. The SUV was spotted by Key Colony Beach Officer Jefferson Rodriguez, who attempted a traffic stop at Mile Marker 54.

The SUV failed to stop as Sheriff’s Office deputies and other law enforcement officers pursued it northbound. The SUV drove into oncoming traffic while reaching speeds of 75 mph, according to reports. Items continued to be ejected out the SUV window. Deputies deployed spikes near Mile Marker 61 and two of the SUV tires were flattened. The SUV continued northbound, but eventually stopped at Mile Marker 62.5 in the center of the highway on the double yellow line.

The driver, identified as Coulson, was detained at that time and DCF was notified. There were also a cat and a dog in the SUV. The Florida Keys Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals took custody of the animals. The animals did not appear to be injured.

Coulson was taken to jail.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also took part in the pursuit.

Would-be robber throws rock through car window

A Key West man was arrested on Wednesday after he allegedly threw a rock into a vehicle in an attempt to rob another man.

Barrington Nathavar Patterson, 28, was charged with criminal mischief over $200 and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Around 3 p.m., Key West Police Department officers responded to the Key Ambassador Resort Inn on South Roosevelt Boulevard after receiving reports of a robbery. According to the report, an officer in the area spotted a man matching the suspect’s description near the DoubleTree Resort and stopped him. The man, later identified as Patterson, was detained immediately.

Meanwhile, another officer met with the victim, who was washing blood from his face as the officer arrived. The victim stated he was sitting in his car when the suspect pulled up behind him on a bicycle. The victim was reportedly counting his money when Patterson approached the car and attempted to open the driver’s side door. The victim said he pulled the car door shut, and in response Patterson picked up a rock and threw it at the window. The rock shattered the window and struck the victim in the face, inflicting a large cut across the middle of the victim’s forehead, according to the report.

Officers drove the victim to the area where Patterson was being detained, and the victim immediately identified him as the man who threw the rock through his window, according to the report.

Patterson was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held without bond.

Store employee arrested, faces refund fraud charge

A Marathon woman was arrested on Wednesday after she allegedly stole more than $800 from her employer by reprinting customer receipts and then refunding them for cash.

Heather Marie Mellott, 37, was charged with 22 counts of petit theft.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Bealls Outlet in response to an employee theft. Deputies met with the manager, who reported that Mellott had been reprinting customer receipts and then later refunding them with cash. Mellott reportedly reprinted a total of 22 receipts and cashed them in for a total of $827.88 between April 7 and April 17. The manager was able to provide copies of the receipts and transactions, as well as a sworn statement.

Deputies then spoke with Mellott, who admitted stealing the money, according to the report. When asked how much she took overall, Mellott reportedly stated it was probably around $1,000; she followed up that statement by saying whatever the manager says is true. She added that she started doing the fraudulent refunds several days after she started working and didn’t know exactly how many times she had done it.

The deputies checked Mellott in their system and determined she had an active warrant for fraudulent use of an ID and a separate petit theft incident. She was arrested on the warrant and the new charges.

Mellott was transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, but she was released two days later after posting a $46,000 bond.

Pair found sleeping in a stolen vehicle

A Louisville, Kentucky man was arrested on Thursday after deputies found him and a woman sleeping in a stolen vehicle.

James Eric Adams, 38, was charged with grand theft of a vehicle and dealing in stolen property.

Around 4:40 a.m., a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputy was patrolling Higgs Beach as part of a watch order when he spotted a man and woman sleeping in a vehicle nearby. The deputy woke the two, obtained their identification and ran their information through dispatch. He also informed them that sleeping in their vehicles is a violation of a county ordinance.

Key West Police Department officers responded as back up, and it was confirmed that neither Adams nor the woman had any outstanding wants or warrants. When asked to whom the vehicle belonged, the woman indicated it was Adams’ vehicle. However, he could not provide any proof of ownership, and he stated the car belonged to a friend.

Dispatch later advised the vehicle was stolen out of Kentucky, leading officers to arrest Adams.

Adams was transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held on a bond of $50,000.

Reckless driving leads to DUI arrest

A Parkland, Florida man was arrested for DUI on Saturday after officers pulled him over for reportedly driving in the wrong lane of traffic.

Christian M. De Castro Mantilla, 30, was charged with DUI with a blood alcohol level over .15 and driving without a license.

Around 1:39 a.m., an officer on patrol near the 800 block of Duval Street watched a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lane almost strike two pedestrians in a crosswalk, according to the report. The officer immediately pulled over the vehicle and met with the driver, identified as De Castro Mantilla, where the officer reported smelling the odor of alcohol on the suspect’s breath.

More officers arrived to assist with the investigation, and they noted De Castro Mantilla had several indicators of intoxication, including bloodshot, glassy eyes. They asked if he would be willing to perform a field sobriety test, and De Castro Mantilla agreed. However, he ultimately failed each component of the test.

Officers transported him to the DUI room, where he ultimately blew a .183 blood alcohol level. Officers also noted that De Castro Mantilla admitted he’s never had a driver’s license, according to the report.

De Castro Mantilla was booked into the Monroe County Detention Center, but he was released the same day after posting a $15,000 bond.

Broken tail light leads to DUI arrest

A Florence, Kentucky man was arrested on Sunday for DUI and marijuana possession after officers spotted him driving on Truman Avenue with broken tail lights.

Joshua M. Kinney, 28, was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia and DUI with a blood alcohol content over .15.

Around 12:17 a.m., an officer patrolling Truman Avenue noticed the black Jaguar driving in front of him didn’t have working tail lights. The officer pulled over the driver, identified as Kinney, and explained why he was stopped. When asked for his license, Kinney reportedly handed over his hotel room key. He also displayed signs of intoxication, such as bloodshot eyes and slurred speech, according to the report.

Another officer arrived as backup and spoke with Kinney, and he also noticed the odor of alcohol and other signs of intoxication, reports state. The officers asked Kinney to perform a field sobriety test and he agreed, but he failed each component of the test. An inventory of his vehicle revealed 1.6 grams of marijuana, a glass pipe with residue and three empty bottles of beer, according to the report.

Kinney was arrested and taken to the Key West DUI room, where he blew a .223 blood alcohol content reading. While speaking with officers, Kinney reportedly stated the date was Sept. 26.

Kinney was booked into the Monroe County Detention Center, but he was released the same day after posting a $15,000 bond.

Man on scooter tries to flee from officer

A Staten Island, New York man was arrested on Monday after he fled officers who spotted him driving a scooter erratically.

Ryan Michael Madigan, 42, was charged with failure to obey an officer’s order to stop and DUI with a blood alcohol content over .15.

Around 8:22 p.m., a Key West Police Department officer was on patrol when he saw a man driving a scooter almost lose his balance and nearly drive into a pole on Amelia Street. The driver then continued forward, with the officer watching him continue to swerve, until he parked the scooter on the side of the road and began to wave at the officer to go around him.

According to the report, Madigan continued to wave until the officer activated his emergency lights. Once Madigan saw the lights, he reportedly accelerated and rolled through a stop sign, drove into the oncoming lane of traffic, parked his scooter and dismounted. However, the officer quickly caught up to him and handcuffed him.

The officer reported a strong smell of alcohol and noticed other signs of intoxication in Madigan. When asked how much he had drank, Madigan replied “four.” Madigan agreed to a field sobriety test, but failed each component. Officers transported him to the Key West DUI room, where his BAC came back as .210.

Madigan was booked into the Monroe County Detention Center, but he was released the following day after posting a $3,000 bond.

Australian man, 22, arrested for speeding

A 22-year-old Australian man was arrested Wednesday night for speeding and recklessly passing vehicles on U.S. 1.

Samy Karim Daim of Sydney was charged with reckless driving. He was also given a notice to appear in court for traveling 43 mph above the posted speed limit.

Middle Keys Deputy Corbin Hradecky was on patrol in Marathon at approximately 9 p.m. when he received an alert for a light-colored Jeep with no headlights on traveling north on U.S. 1 at a high rate of speed and dangerously passing other motorists. The Jeep was on the Seven-Mile Bridge when the alert was reported.

Deputy Hradecky spotted the suspect Jeep shortly thereafter still traveling north on U.S. 1 near 20th Street. The speed limit is 35 mph and the Jeep was traveling 78 mph. Deputy Hradecky conducted a traffic stop. Deputy Hradecky asked the driver, identified as Daim, why he was traveling so fast and Daim responded that it was late and he wanted to get to Miami.

Detective Matthew Corey then contacted Deputy Hradecky. Detective Corey stated he was in his personal vehicle on the Seven-Mile Bridge when he saw the Jeep pass a long line of cars at a high rate of speed. Detective Corey stated the Jeep came within 200 feet of striking another vehicle head-on. Detective Corey stated other drivers had to slow to well below the speed limit to avoid a potential crash with the Jeep.

Daim was taken to jail.

Marathon man, 20, faces DUI charge

A Marathon man was arrested for underage drinking and DUI on Thursday after deputies watched him almost lose control of his vehicle on U.S. 1.

Andrew David Griffiths, 20, was charged with DUI, refusal to accept a citation and underage possession of liquor.

Around 12:03 a.m., a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputy was on patrol in Marathon when he received a report from a gas station employee that there was a potentially intoxicated driver leaving the area. The deputy observed the suspected vehicle make a wide right-hand turn onto U.S. 1 and then over-correct, with the driver almost losing control, according to the report.

Another deputy in the area spotted the vehicle swerving in its lane, and he pulled over the vehicle. The deputy met with the driver, identified as Griffiths, and noticed several signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, the smell of alcohol and droopy eyes. Griffiths reportedly said he didn’t drink anything that night, but later said he had two beers. A search of his vehicle revealed a three-quarters empty bottle of tequila.

Deputies had him perform a field sobriety test, which he ultimately failed. He was then arrested and transported to the Marathon DUI room, where he refused to provide a breath sample and refused to sign his DUI citation. He was then transported to jail, where he reportedly became argumentative with detention deputies. According to the report, Griffiths also used his phone call to contact the Prison Rape Elimination Act Hotline and told the operator that he was not a suspect but a victim because he was not drunk.

Griffiths was booked into Marathon jail, but was released later the same day after posting a $3,500 bond.

Man found attempting to rob unlocked vehicles

A Key West man was arrested on Friday after he allegedly broke into two trucks and attempted to steal numerous personal items.

Carl Henry Nicholas, 21, was charged with two counts of burglary of a conveyance and possession of burglary tools.

Around 2:53 a.m., Key West Police Department officers responded to the Santa Clara Condominium on Northside Drive after a witness spotted a man attempting to open several car doors. The suspect, later identified as Nicholas, reportedly tried a number of vehicles before finding a truck with the door unlocked and began to rummage through it, according to the witness.

Officers arrived and found Nicholas stuffing change, money and lottery tickets into a bag, and they arrested him. He initially stated the vehicles belonged to a friend of his, but he couldn’t provide a name that matched the registered owner. The witness later explained that the truck they found Nicholas in was actually the second truck he had broken into, but both trucks belonged to the same owner.

A search of the bag revealed $139.14. Officers noted that Nicholas was wearing gloves and using a flashlight during the alleged burglary, both of which constitute burglary tools.

Nicholas was booked into the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held on a bond of $25,000.

Couple arrested on child-neglect charges

A Florida couple was arrested on Saturday after they allegedly left their three young children unattended at the pool for multiple periods of 10 and 15 minutes.

Odalys Mariel Hernandez, 24, and Juan Carlos Aviles-Vega, 27, were charged with one count each of child neglect without great bodily harm.

Around 5:11 p.m., Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Sea Dell Motel in Marathon, after hotel staff and patrons reported that the children had been left unattended. According to the report, witnesses said two of the children, ages 6 and 4, were left swimming in the pool unattended. The third child, just 1 year old, was left in a small playpen at the edge of the pool, with no shade from the sun or supervision. The witnesses added the parents were extremely intoxicated, with the father “sleeping off and on” and the mother stumbling in and out of the hotel room to occasionally check on the children.

Deputies spoke with the parents, who declined to give statements. Both were arrested and placed in the patrol car. When deputies went back in an attempt to interview them, both Hernandez and Aviles-Vega were found asleep in the patrol car and had to be woken. Both reportedly smelled strongly of alcohol.

Deputies spoke with the two older children, and they stated they did not know how to swim. Deputies also noted that the temperature outside was approximately 88 degrees with few clouds and a heat index of 98.

The children were turned over to their grandfather. Hernandez and Aviles-Vega were booked into the Monroe County Detention Center, where they were being held on $75,000 bonds.

Fight at ER leads to man’s arrest

A trip to the ER turned violent after an Edmond, Oklahoma man allegedly refused to be treated and later got into a fight with a security guard.

David Ross Rester, 30, was charged with felony battery.

Around 5:15 a.m., Key West Police Department officers responded to a report of a fight at the Lower Keys Medical Center. Dispatch informed the officers that the suspect, later identified as Rester, was walking away from the emergency room toward the entrance of the Key West Golf Club on College Road. Several ER staff flagged down the officers and informed them that Rester had fled into the mangroves, according to the report.

Rester reportedly exited the mangroves a short time later, with officers detaining him. Meanwhile, another officer went to visit the security guard, who was being treated in the ER for injuries sustained in the fight. The victim stated Rester had come to the ER but refused treatment, leading staff to ask him to leave. Rester reportedly left, returned and began fighting with the victim, who sustained injuries on his head and back, according to the report. The victim also said he believed Rester struck him in the head with a rock.

Officers interviewed Rester, who stated the victim attacked him. He also stated the various injuries he had were a result of the fight. However, hospital staff and another officer who encountered Rester earlier confirmed his injuries were already present prior to the fight, according to the report.

Based on the situation, officers determined Rester was the primary aggressor and arrested him. He was booked into the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held on a $2,500 bond.

Man arrested on charges of breaching the peace

A Stock Island man was arrested on Monday after he allegedly began shouting profanity at several people and acting aggressive, seemingly for no reason, according to reports.

Randy Todd Reamer, 51, was charged with disturbing the peace. He was also arrested after deputies discovered he had an active warrant for violation of probation.

Around 8 p.m., a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputy was on patrol near 12th Avenue on Stock Island when a group of four people flagged him down. The group pointed to a man across the street, identified as Reamer, and explained that he had been harassing them by yelling expletives at them.

The deputy spoke with a couple from the group, who stated they were checking their mail when Reamer began yelling expletives at the wife, according to the report. The couple said they did not respond or engage with Reamer, but he reportedly approached them any way in an attempt to start a confrontation. The couple told Reamer they would call the police, and he reportedly turned around and walked back across the street.

The other two victims stated Reamer walked in front of their vehicle and began waving his arms and yelling at them. He then allegedly began striking the vehicle’s window with a closed fist and continued to yell. Reamer reportedly retreated back across the street again after one of the victims said she was calling her father.

The deputy attempted to question Reamer, but he refused to speak. Reamer reportedly turned around and held his arms behind his back to be handcuffed. A check with dispatch confirmed Reamer had an outstanding warrant.

Reamer was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held on a bond of $2,500.

Registration, drug issues spell arrest

A Cudjoe Key woman was arrested on Tuesday after deputies pulled her over for vehicle registration issues and drug possession, after she allegedly admitted to having MDMA hidden in her underwear.

Summer Chumani Desport, 23, was charged with driving with a suspended license, attaching a license plate not assigned to the vehicle and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription.

Around 9 p.m., a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputy pulled over a vehicle for having a license plate that was assigned to a different vehicle. The deputy met with the driver, identified as Desport, who stated she put the tag on the vehicle so she could register it. As the deputy ran Desport’s information through his system, Desport stated her license was suspended.

Due to the license plate and suspended license, the deputy placed Desport under arrest. When asked if she had anything on her person, Desport admitted to having “molly,” or MDMA, in her underwear. Since no female deputies were present, Desport was transported to the Monroe County Detention Center to be searched.

Once at jail, a search confirmed Desport had approximately .7 grams of a white crystallized substance that tested positive for methamphetamine.

Desport was booked into jail, where she was being held on a bond of $3,000.

Already in jail, man faces more charges

A Marathon man who was already in jail for violating probation received additional charges Friday for an armed robbery of a man in January.

Thomas Andrew Lancaster, 22, was charged with battery, kidnapping and robbery with a deadly weapon.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 7700 block of Aviation Boulevard on Jan. 17, 2019 in reference to a burglary. The victim stated Lancaster and another man — who remains at large — came into his camper brandishing a knife. Lancaster kicked a woman in the stomach and then demanded money from the male victim, according to MCSO.

The victim gave him $90 and told him that he had more money in his vehicle outside of the camper. Outside, a struggle ensued between the male victim and the suspects, with the victim receiving a cut to his hand. Lancaster and the other suspect then fled the scene.

While Lancaster reportedly had his face covered with a T-shirt, the victim still recognized him and the other suspect in a photo lineup.

Lancaster remains in jail without bond. The case remains under investigation, and more arrests may be pending.

Lancaster has a lengthy arrest history that includes theft of a firearm, robbery and drug-related offenses.

Man arrested for allegedly selling plastic as crack

A Grassy Key man was arrested Friday on a warrant following a January undercover operation in which he allegedly sold plastic to man under the guise that it was crack cocaine.

Manuel Antonio Artiles, 35, was charged with selling of a substance in lieu of a controlled substance.

On Jan. 2, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office detectives conducted an undercover buy operation with a confidential informant. The informant contacted a man he knew as “Manny,” identified as Artiles, and arranged to purchase $40 worth of crack cocaine.

The informant met with Artiles near 26th Street in Marathon, with Artiles conducting the sale from the passenger side of a vehicle. Afterward, the informant met with detectives and handed over the suspected cocaine. Inside, however, they found what appeared to be a piece of plastic weighing approximately one gram. A field test was conducted and the substance came back negative. It was later sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for further testing, and the FDLE confirmed there were no narcotics identified on the piece of plastic.

A warrant for Artiles’ arrest was signed on May 7 by Monroe County Judge Ruth Becker. Artiles was arrested Friday and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held on a $30,000 bond.

Woman arrested for aggravated battery

A North Miami Beach woman was arrested on Saturday after she allegedly threw a coconut at a man for filming her on Duval Street.

Shonta Latasha Bolds, 36, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Around 1:12 a.m., Key West Police Department officers responded to the VIP Gentleman’s Club on Duval Street after receiving a call about an assault. Officers met with the victim, who stated he was walking north on Duval Street and filming on his phone. As he passed the VIP Club, the victim said “ladies” and continued to walk. However, a woman on the porch of the club, later identified as Bolds, began cursing and threatening the victim, according to the report.

The victim continued to walk away from the location, but Bolds reportedly began to walk toward him and continued to yell insults at him. At some point, Bolds allegedly threw a coconut at the victim, although it didn’t hit him. Officers reviewed the footage captured by the victim, which corroborated his story.

Bolds told officers that she did throw a coconut at the victim, but added that it didn’t hit him. She stated the victim provoked her by filming her. Officers explained that she did not have any expectation of privacy when sitting on the front porch of the club, and that anyone could film that location at will.

Bolds was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center. She was released later the same day.

Man faces charge of indecent exposure

A Key West man was arrested on Sunday after he allegedly defecated on the sidewalk in front of a restaurant on Southard Street.

Edward R. Borowski, 51, was charged with indecent exposure.

Around 7:30 p.m., a Key West Police Department officer responded to Southard Street near Mr. Z’s and The Café on Southard Street after a person called and reported seeing a man defecating on the sidewalk. The officer arrived and found Borowski in a doorway between the two restaurants. When asked what he was doing, Borowski stated he had too much to drink and was planning on going home, according to the report.

The officer then met with the witness, who stated she was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Duval and Southard streets when she saw Borowski defecating on the sidewalk. The witness stated that Borowski’s genitals were exposed, and that her 9-year-old sister saw him as well, according to the report.

Based on the circumstances, Borowski was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was released the next day.
