June 13 marked the end of the road for two Key West residents when the Key West Police Department arrested them for grand theft in two separate cases that resulted in arrests long after the crimes occurred.
In the first case, Andrew Mikhale Charles, 21, was arrested on charges of grand theft and fraud after he paid $5.71 for $381.02 worth of goods from his employer, the Banana Republic on Duval Street. According to the report, he also stole an additional $200 worth of goods from the store, including three pairs of pants, four shirts and a pair of sunglasses. Charles primarily achieved these thefts by having other store employees give him “huge discounts” on purchases he made.
According to the report, the thefts occurred between June and July in 2016. However, Charles quit prior to being caught and police had difficulty contacting him. After obtaining evidence and a warrant, officers arrested Charles on Wednesday. As of Friday, he was being held at the Monroe County Detention Center with a bond of $5,000.
In the second, more recent case, officers arrested Lillan Marie Macy on charges of grand theft and fraud/impersonation with a veteran victim.
According to the report, on April 27 an officer responded to a report of fraud against the Dean-Lopez Funeral Home on Simonton Street. The officer met with the owner of the funeral home and the vice president of the First State Bank of the Florida Keys, who informed him that unauthorized charges had been made on the funeral home’s business account.
The charges were made between October 2017 through April 2018, and totaled $21,138.64. Suspects were identified, and on Wednesday officers arrested Macy, who made her $35,000 bond and was released that same day.
