The Key West Police Department arrested a Cape Coral, Florida man on Friday after he attempted to fight several people, attacked a woman and ran from police.
A KWPD officer responded to the intersection of Simonton and Eaton streets around 9 p.m. in reference to a physical disturbance. Upon arrival, several people flagged down the officer, and reported that a man down the street was fighting with a woman.
As the officer pulled up, he spotted a man later identified as Robert Allen Campo, 48. Campo spotted the officer, and started running toward the back of the United Methodist Church on Eaton. Campo attempted to jump a fence but failed, and the officer caught up with him. After displaying his Taser, the officer was able to detain Campo and place him in handcuffs. However, Campo continued to resist by refusing to turn around or place his hands behind his back.
The officer spoke with two witnesses, who both described Campo arguing with an unidentified male a few minutes before. According to the report, Campo attempted to fight the male, but the male retreated to his vehicle and left. Campo then returned to his vehicle and tried to get the keys from an unidentified female companion. She refused and began to walk away.
After this, witnesses said Campo grabbed the woman in a “bear hug” and shoved her against a concrete fence. The woman began to scream, and several witnesses rushed to defend her. Campo dropped the woman, and began to try and fight everyone there. Meanwhile, the woman left the scene.
Campo then walked in front of a truck, pushed on the hood and then challenged the driver to fight him. Witnesses began to clear the area, but Campo reportedly continued to try and chase another witness around a parked vehicle in an attempt to confront him. At this point, the officer arrived and Campo attempted to flee.
Another witness stated Campo punched him in the face, but the witness had no injuries and didn’t wish to press charges.
Officers then began to transport Campo to the Monroe County Detention Center, but he began to be uncooperative. He started banging his head on the cage partition, causing the officer to pull over and request backup. After officers secured Campo by tightening his seatbelt, Campo attempted to spit on the backup officer.
Campo continued to yell and curse all the way to the detention center and was so uncooperative that he had to be placed on a restraining chair, according to the report.
Campo was charged with resisting an officer, disorderly conduct for brawling and battery on a law enforcement officer for spitting on him. He was released on Saturday around 4:14 p.m.
