The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Homestead man on Saturday after he impersonated a police officer by trying to pull over a vehicle using blue lights.
Around 7 p.m., a deputy responded to a report of a vehicle illegally using blue lights. The deputy waited around Mile Marker 102 and pulled over the reported vehicle.
After being pulled over, the driver was rummaging around the driver and passenger seats, causing the deputy to draw his weapon. The deputy ordered the driver to stop moving, to which he complied.
The deputy was able to identify the driver as 19-year-old Sandro Sierra Gil. The deputy asked Gil if he was a law enforcement officer, to which Gil replied “No.” Following this, Gil agreed to speak with the deputy.
According to the report, Gil stated he was driving northbound when he saw a van driving too close to two motorcycles. Gil then said he activated his blue lights in an attempt to pull over the van. When asked what his intentions were, Gil stated he simply wanted to talk to them. The deputy asked why Gil didn’t just call the police, and he responded by saying “because I don’t want problems with the police.” He also told the deputy that the blue light was underneath the passenger seat.
Following this, the deputy conducted a record check of Gil and discovered he was driving with a suspended license due to a failure to pay traffic fines.
The deputy also spoke with the driver of the van that Gil tried to pull over, and provided a written statement.
Gil was charged with impersonating a police officer and unlawful use of blue lights. He was transported to Plantation Key jail, where he was being held without bond. He was released around 2:40 p.m. on Sunday.
