The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Key Largo man for possession of cocaine, marijuana and heroin on Sunday after pulling him over for an expired license plate.
Around 1:50 a.m., deputies spotted a black Volkswagen straddling the lane line of U.S. 1 while traveling northbound. According to the report, the deputies moved closer in their patrol car, and noticed that the registration sticker for the license plate expired in June. They conducted a traffic stop and met with the driver, later identified as 35-year-old Jeffrey Paul Schultz.
According to the report, Schultz immediately became aggressive, stating there was no reason to stop him. While running Schultz information, another deputy spotted what appeared to be a small bag of cocaine in the passenger seat. Deputies had Schultz exit the vehicle and detained him.
Following a search of his vehicle, deputies found three used syringes, four small bags of cocaine, one small bag of heroin, a partially smoked joint, a bottle cap which tested positive for cocaine residue, a burnt spoon and two pipes.
Deputies read Schultz his Miranda rights, and he agreed to speak with deputies. However, when asked whether the drugs and paraphernalia were his, Schultz refused to give a straight answer.
Schultz was charged for possession of 0.5 grams of cocaine, possession of 0.1 grams of heroin, possession of 0.5 grams of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. He was transported to the Plantation Key jail without incident. Schultz was released from jail on Monday.
