The Key West Police Department arrested a homeless Key West man over the weekend for possession of drugs and disorderly conduct after he yelled obscenities and made sexual remarks to women passing by a Duval Street hotel.
Officers initially responded Saturday to a report of an intoxicated person at Ocean Key Resort. Upon arrival, they met with a security guard from the resort who pointed out a man walking away from the officers and the guard. He said that the man had made a number of sexual remarks to women walking in the area, and the security guard wanted him trespassed.
Officers followed the man, who ran in the opposite direction when he spotted the patrol car. Officers caught up with him and detained him, eventually identifying him as 49-year-old Douglas William Bondie.
Bondie threw his cellphone at the patrol car and refused to answer the officers’ questions, reports state. Officers informed Bondie as to why they were detaining him, and then told them they would search him. Bondie said he had no weapons, but officers found a pocket knife on him, to which Bondie stated that “everyone has one of those.” Officers also found marijuana in his pocket. Bondie said he traded his shirt for the marijuana.
At this point, Bondie became belligerent, yelling racial slurs and obscenities at the officers and stating that the officers had “set him up.” He caused such a scene that people across the street could hear him and began watching the spectacle, according to reports. A witness later provided a written statement about Bondie’s actions both before and after the arrival of police.
Bondie was charged with possession of marijuana and disorderly conduct. Officers transported him to the Monroe County Detention Center without incident.
