The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Stuart, Florida man on Saturday after finding him and several friends smoking marijuana outside their hotel room.
Brendan James Kimmins was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of cocaine and destroying evidence.
A deputy was eating lunch at the cafeteria outside of Ocean’s Edge Hotel when an anonymous person approached him to report several men smoking weed on the balcony by the pool. The deputy walked toward the area, where he saw four men standing on the balcony. According to the report, the area smelled strongly of marijuana.
The deputy asked the men which room they were in, and one of them answered with their room number. The men then ran into the room, disregarding the deputy’s orders to stay on the balcony. The deputy obtained a master key and went to the room, where he could hear the men running around. The room also smelled strongly of marijuana, according to the report.
The deputy went to open the door with the master key, but the security latch was secured. However, one of the men opened the door for the deputy. Upon entering the room, he noticed the bathroom door was shut. According to the report, he opened the door to find Kimmins trying to flush a marijuana cigarette down the toilet.
A detailed search of the room found several more marijuana cigarettes, two baggies of cocaine weighing about a gram, an electric cigarette with hashish oil and a marijuana brownie. The deputy also found approximately $1,100 in cash.
Kimmins was arrested and taken to the Monroe County Detention Center. He was released later the same day. Kimmins and the three other men were issued trespass warnings for Ocean’s Edge Hotel.
