BIG PINE KEY — A Hialeah man accused of stealing an aluminum door from under a house on Hurricane Irma-ravaged island was arrested after a sergeant stopped him before he could escape, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Yoannys Jose Rosa Placeres, 38, was charged with burglary and grand theft.
The owner on Bogie Drive called the Sheriff’s Office after he found Rosa Placeres in front of his home in a truck that was pulling a trailer, reports say. The door was in the trailer and the owner confronted Rosa Placeres who claimed the door had been in the street.
The owner began to call the Sheriff’s Office when Rosa Placeres threw the door in the yard and took off in his truck with the owner giving chase.
Sgt. Linda Mixon heard the call from dispatchers and intercepted the suspect’s vehicle, stopping him at Avenue B and Palm Drive, reports say.
Rosa Placeres reportedly continued to deny stealing the door. A check on his name revealed a suspended driver’s license and the temporary tag on his vehicle was expired, reports say.
The victim has surveillance cameras on his property which clearly showed the suspect coming onto the property and taking the door, reports say.
Rosa Placeres was taken to the Monroe County Detention Center on Stock Island.
