The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Key West man on Friday for the burglary of a Rockland Key warehouse.
Zachary Lee Humphries, 33, was charged with burglary, larceny and damaging property under $200.
On Aug. 20, a deputy responded to a Calle Uno Road warehouse in reference to a burglary over the weekend. A construction worker reported that someone stole over $3,000 worth of tools from the warehouse. The tools included two planers, a drill press, a table saw and a miter saw.
A review of security footage, as well as several interviews, helped detectives identify suspects. Simultaneously, detectives received a tip about the location of the stolen goods. They were able to locate the tools and match them to their corresponding serial numbers.
Detectives confronted Humphries as a prime suspect. He initially denied even knowing about the property, but once detectives revealed specific information his story changed. He ultimately admitted to being a former employee of the property that was robbed. Humphries continued to deny any involvement with the theft.
However, the video footage, interviews and the presence of Humphries’ vehicle at the scene of the crime gave detectives probable cause to arrest him. According to Adam Linhardt, spokesperson for MCSO, detectives are investigating multiple other burglaries in the Lower Keys and more charges or arrests may be pending.
Humphries was transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held without bail.
