A Miami man with a sweet tooth is being charged with a felony after the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office found him in possession of more than 2.5 ounces of marijuana-infused candy.
Patrick Alam, 31, was charged with possession of marijuana over 20 grams.
At 1:11 a.m. on Tuesday, deputies spotted a vehicle going about 15 mph over the speed limit on U.S.1 near Mile Marker 27. A traffic stop was conducted, and deputies made contact with the driver and Alam, the passenger.
According to the report, deputies immediately smelled marijuana. After being asked, Alam admitted to having just smoked prior to the stop. He then admitted to more marijuana in the car, and produced a jar with about 6.3 grams of marijuana from a Burger King bag. The container had a sticker on it proclaiming it to be a “Lemon Tree” strain.
Deputies also found an open can of Heineken still cold to the touch in the same bag.
A search of the vehicle revealed a sealed bag of marijuana gummy bears. The bag had both a sticker stating it contained “400 mg of sativa” and a warning label proclaiming “This product contains a high level of THC.” The gummies came back positive for marijuana after a field test.
Alam claimed ownership of the gummies, and stated that he eats them to relax. He also claimed the marijuana.
Deputies arrested Alam and transported him to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held without bond.
