Determined to get home, and knowing his driver’s license was suspended, a Tavernier man led the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office on a short pursuit on U.S. 1.
Paul Vincent Pecor, 40, was charged with driving with a suspended license and fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer.
On Saturday around 12:20 a.m., a deputy on patrol noticed a red truck with an almost-illegible license plate. The deputy proceeded to conduct a traffic stop around Mile Marker 81, but the vehicle didn’t stop.
According to the report, there were plenty of side roads and turn lanes to pull over in, but the truck just kept driving. The deputy noted that his own top speed during the pursuit never exceeded 61 mph, and there was very little traffic on the road. The pursuit lasted for approximately three miles.
The driver, later identified as Pecor, finally turned down a residential road and parked the car at his residence. Pecor exited the vehicles, and deputies detained him at gunpoint.
After being placed in handcuffs, deputies asked Pecor why he fled. According to the report, Pecor he stated he knew his license was suspended and he just wanted to get home.
Pecor was taken to the Plantation Key jail, but he was released later that same day.
