A Key West man was doing a lot of shopping, but no actual buying, when he was arrested Monday night in Marathon.
Kevin Parks Skinner, 56, faces changes of grand theft, possession of stolen property and possession of a pill without a prescription after deputies found an Adderall pill in his possession.
The incident started when Deputy Michael Maleta of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Kmart in Marathon around 7:30 p.m. Monday to investigate reports of suspicious activity.
Maleta learned upon arrival that a man, later identified as Skinner, had been pushing a shopping cart full of merchandise from The Home Depot when he arrived at the Kmart in Marathon. The Home Depot merchandise was not in bags and did not appear to have been purchased legally. Skinner had no receipt to prove he had paid for any items from The Home Depot.
Skinner later had attempted to take a shopping cart from Kmart, but was stopped by an employee. The suspect then left the Home Depot cart and all the ill-gotten merchandise in front of the Kmart and walked away. Deputies notified The Home Depot and an employee from the home improvement store arrived to retrieve the cart.
Deputy Maleta then found Skinner and asked him where he was headed. Skinner said he was en route to The Home Depot to retrieve his belongings. He told deputies his boss had given him money and told him to pick up some tools from The Home Depot. Skinner told investigators he had purchased the tools about two hours prior, but was unable to produce a receipt.
The Home Depot manager confirmed the items — with a total value of $1,052 — had indeed been stolen.
The list of charges against Skinner grew when deputies found an Adderall during a search of his person.
