The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man on Sunday for DUI and possession of marijuana after a concerned citizen reported that he crashed into a bridge.

Steven Allwood, 33, who recently moved to Key Largo, was charged with DUI, refusal to submit a breath test, refusal to accept citation, possession of paraphernalia and possession of marijuana under 20 grams.

Around 9:15 p.m., deputies received a report of a reckless driver going northbound on U.S. 1. The reporting person said that a vehicle appeared to hit the Saddle Bunch Bridge No. 5, near Mile Marker 12.8, and then pulled off the roadway.

Deputies located the vehicle on the shoulder of the roadway just past the bridge and made contact with Allwood, who said he pulled over to enter his address into his GPS. According to the report, deputies could smell alcohol on him and he physically appeared to be intoxicated. Deputies asked him to perform a field sobriety test, and he agreed.

Allwood ultimately failed the field sobriety test, and furthermore, he became aggressive with deputies during the instructions. Due to the circumstances, deputies detained Allwood. A search of his vehicle revealed a sunglasses case with a pipe and 5.5 grams of marijuana.

Allwood was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held on a $2,500 bond.

Information in the Crime Report is obtained from reports provided by area law enforcement agencies.
