A Key West woman working at Home Depot is facing a felony charge after it was discovered she was purposely omitting items during checkout, as well as giving out unapproved discounts.
Jennifer Marie Estevez, 36, is charged with grand theft over $300.
On Saturday, Key West Police Department officers responded to the Home Depot on North Roosevelt in response to a reported theft. The officers met with a loss prevention manager who stated that an employee, Estevez, had been scanning items and then voiding them from the record. This allowed customers to leave without paying for the various items.
Estevez’s cash register flagged several transactions as suspicious activity, leading loss prevention to investigate her, according to the report. They found a total of three transactions where customers left without paying for merchandise, with the loss totaled at $535.50.
Additionally, the loss prevention investigation revealed that Estevez was allegedly taking various small items such as soda, candy and phone chargers without paying.
According to the report, Estevez stated she also gave friends and family members her employee discount, amounting to approximately $3,000, without approval from her supervisors.
Estevez was taken to the Monroe County Detention Center without incident.
