After being pulled over for driving erratically on Wednesday, a Jupiter, Florida, man found himself being charged with DUI and drug possession.

Curtis James Shotwell, 23, was charged with DUI, possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Around 1:49 a.m., a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputy spotted a truck driving 33 mph over the speed limit on U.S. 1 near Mile Marker 53. The deputy made a U-turn to get behind the truck, but as he caught up, the truck also made a U-turn.

The deputy turned around again, and was finally able to get behind the truck, when it appeared it was going to make a turn, but instead stopped in the middle of an intersection before continuing forward. At this point, the deputy conducted a traffic stop.

According to the report, the deputy made contact with the driver, identified as Shotwell, and immediately smelled a strong odor of alcohol. The deputy asked for his license.

“Shotwell just looked at me for a moment before slowly showing me his wallet,” wrote the deputy.

Shotwell’s appearance and mannerisms led the deputy to believe he was intoxicated, and he had Shotwell perform a field sobriety test. Shotwell agreed, but unsuccessfully performed the three components of the test.

The deputy placed him under arrest for DUI and then searched his vehicle. Inside, he found a baggie with .1 grams of cocaine, and another empty baggy that field tested positive for cocaine. The deputy then transported Shotwell to the Marathon DUI room, where he ultimately refused to provide a breath sample.

Shotwell was taken to the Monroe county Detention Center, but was released that evening.

Information in the Crime Report is obtained from reports provided by area law enforcement agencies.
