A Haines City, Florida man who ran from the police twice on Thursday wound up in jail on drug charges, but not before he was shocked by a stun gun three or four times.

Dariel Luis Gonzalez, 24, was charged with possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, possession of marijuana under 20 grams, fleeing an officer and two counts of resisting an officer without violence.

Around 12:47 p.m., a Key West Police Department officer near the Key Plaza Shopping Center reported that a suspect identified as Gonzalez was fleeing the area. Gonzalez had also evaded an officer that same morning, although it was unclear why he was running initially.

A foot chase ensued, and Gonzalez attempted to escape through the Stadium Mobile Home Park on 14th Street. An officer pulled up in his patrol car and was able to shoot Gonzalez with his stun gun, but the stun gun probes disconnected, having no effect on him. However, as Gonzalez tried to jump a fence, he lost his footing, allowing officers to catch up with him.

Gonzalez continued to flee until another officer was able to deploy his stun gun, shocking him and causing him to fall to the ground. Gonzalez continued to resist arrest, leading the officer to deliver two or three more stun cycles from his stun gun. Gonzalez finally gave up and officers were able to handcuff him.

A search of Gonzalez revealed 1.5 grams of marijuana and seven Adderall pills.

Officers transported him to the hospital to be medically cleared, and afterwards to the Monroe County Detention Center. He was being held there without bond.

Information in the Crime Report is obtained from reports provided by area law enforcement agencies.
