The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Key Largo man on Friday after he went to a liquor store he was previously trespassed from and then spat at a deputy.

Eric Daniel Torres, 33, was charged with trespassing and simple assault on a law enforcement officer.

Around 11:08 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a drunken and disorderly person at the Speedway gas station in Key Largo. According to the report, a gas station clerk reported that Torres entered the store and stole a single Natural Ice beer from the cooler. The clerk also said Torres was visibly intoxicated, and at one point he even walked behind the cash register in the store.

On the way to the gas station, a deputy spotted Torres at Denny’s Liquors, where he was so drunk he was “barely able to stand up without falling over,” according to the report. A check of Torres’ driver’s license showed he had been previously trespassed from the liquor store. While attempting to arrest him, Torres tensed up and pulled away from officers. After getting him under control, Torres spit at the face of one of the deputies, but missed and hit his leg instead. He also kept yelling expletives and slurs at the deputies, reports state.

The gas station clerk was unsure if she wanted to press charges for the stolen beer.

Torres was arrested and transported to the Plantation Key jail, where he was being held on a $12,500 bond.

Information in the Crime Report is obtained from reports provided by area law enforcement agencies.
