CRAIG KEY — Two Tamarac construction workers accused of dumping debris on the side of U.S. 1 on Wednesday were arrested, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Erick Santiago Ruiz Torres, 22, was charged with felony littering commercial waste and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
Harold Valencia-Camayo, 46, was charged with the same littering violation and contributing to the delinquency of a minor as his 17-year-old son was with him, reports say.
An undercover FWC officer in plainclothes and an unmarked vehicle saw the three throwing trash bags onto the ground near southbound Mile Marker 72.5 at 1:30 p.m., reports say.
The men told the officer they were redoing a bathroom in Kendall and were en route to Marathon.
Valencia-Camayo told the officer had permission to dump the trash from “a sheriff,” but he could not name him or her and also said he thought it was legal, because other trash was there, reports say.
Torres said he was simply doing what Valencia-Camayo instructed him to do, reports say. The 17-year-old was not interviewed given his age, the officer wrote.
Both men were taken to the Monroe County Detention Center on Stock Island.
