A Key West boat repairman was charged with DUI and marijuana possession after an officer spotted him driving erratically and dangerously on Saturday.

Glenn Allen Mitchell, 54, was charged with DUI, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

Around 10:25 p.m., a Key West Police Department officer noticed a vehicle driving on Grinnell Street driving with its lights off. After getting behind it, the officer watched the vehicle run a red light, almost strike a curb and fail to maintain its lane. After catching up to it near Palm Avenue, the officer pulled the vehicle over.

After meeting with the driver, Mitchell, the officer immediately noticed the strong smell of alcohol, as well as visual cues from Mitchell himself. According to the report, Mitchell tried to give the officer his debit card instead of his driver’s license, and his speech was extremely slurred.

Mitchell ultimately admitted to drinking a couple beers at Rick’s, but continued to give the officer unclear answers as to how much and when he drank.

Mitchell agreed to a field sobriety test, but failed each portion of it. When asked if he would submit a breath sample, Mitchell became irate and argumentative. At several points, Mitchell tried to tell the officer he passed the field sobriety test. In the end, he refused to submit a breath sample.

A search of his vehicle after his arrest revealed about 6 grams of marijuana and a white metal pipe.

Mitchell was taken to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was released on Monday after posting an $8,000 bond.
