A Canton, Georgia man was arrested on Sunday after he fled officers and later give them a fake name because he didn’t have a driver’s license.
Mairon Gomez, 36, was charged with fleeing an officer, giving a false ID to an officer and driving without a license.
Around 9:35 a.m., a Key Colony Beach Police Department officer was monitoring traffic speed on Sadowski Causeway when he spotted a vehicle traveling 9 mph over the speed limit. The officer pulled onto the road and attempted to pull over the vehicle with his lights and sirens on, but the car accelerated and continued down the road.
After being followed for about a quarter of a mile, the vehicle finally pulled into a motel parking lot and parked. The driver, later identified as Gomez, attempted to exit the vehicle. However, the way he parked prevented him from opening his door enough to get out. This led the officer to exit his patrol car with his weapon drawn and order Gomez to stay in the vehicle.
The officer asked Gomez why he didn’t stop, and Gomez said he thought the officer was chasing someone else. When asked for his license, Gomez stated he didn’t have one. When asked for his name, Gomez said “Aldair Rivas Gomez” and gave a different date of birth, stating he was a Guatemalan citizen and not a resident of the United States. However, no record for that name or date of birth came up, which led the officer to call Border Patrol.
Border Patrol agents ran Gomez’ fingerprints, and his actual name and date of birth came up. It also revealed he had a warrant out of Georgia for DUI, and that he had never been issued a license.
Gomez was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held on a $9,000 bond.
