A Marathon taxi driver was charged with a DUI on Tuesday, despite being warned by deputies not to drive that night.

Jan Hans Gasperik, 45, was charged with DUI with a blood alcohol level over .20.

Around 4 a.m., a concerned party reported an intoxicated couple who were potentially planning to drive home from the Brass Monkey bar in Marathon. Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the area, where they intercepted Gasperik and his wife, and advised them not to drive home due to their level of intoxication. The two agreed to walk home, and left the area.

Approximately 30 minutes later, the same deputies spotted Gasperik driving his vehicle with an “Ahoy Taxi” insignia displayed on it. They conducted a traffic stop, and asked him why he was driving after being warned not to. According to the report, Gasperik repeatedly stated he didn’t understand what was happening, despite the deputies explaining that they spoke to him 30 minutes before.

The deputies asked Gasperik to perform a field sobriety test several times, but he continued to say he didn’t know what was going on. Deputies transported him to the Marathon DUI room, where he blew a .244 BAC.

Gasperik was taken to the Monroe County Detention Center, but he was released several hours later.

Information in the Crime Report is obtained from reports provided by area law enforcement agencies.
