A Key West man was arrested for marijuana possession on Sunday after a deputy clocked him traveling 61 mph in a 35 mph zone.

Phernando Torres Hill, 34, was charged with possession of marijuana under 20 grams, possession of paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance.

Around 1:30 a.m., a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputy patrolling U.S. 1 around Mile Marker 32 spotted a vehicle speeding southbound. After determining the vehicle was almost 30 mph over the speed limit, the deputy pulled over the car and met with the driver, identified as Hill. According to the report, the deputy smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle, so he requested a K-9 unit’s assistance.

The K-9 unit arrived, with the dog alerting to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle. A search of the car revealed several packages of electronic cigarette cartridges with THC oil, 2.2 grams of marijuana, the remnants of a marijuana cigarette and a half-empty bottle of Hennessy.

Hill was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, and he was released the next day after posting a $45,000 bond.

Information in the Crime Report is obtained from reports provided by area law enforcement agencies.
