A Marathon man was arrested on Sunday after he reportedly pulled out a pocket knife while trying to fight another man he passed on the street.

Daniel Christopher Gomez, 28, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.

Around 10:22 p.m., Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call at the Tom Thumb Food Stores near 26th Street, oceanside, in Marathon. The deputies met with the victim, who pointed out Gomez and stated he pulled out a pocket knife while threatening to fight him, according to the report.

Deputies met with Gomez and asked him if he had any weapons, and Gomez said he had a knife on him. Gomez elaborated on the situation, and stated the victim had been bothering him all day. He then stated the victim walked up to him and “asked him to fight.”

However, the victim stated Gomez had been bothering him for several days. He said that Gomez spotted him and crossed the street to confront him, where he reportedly said “Let’s fight.” At that point, the victim stated Gomez pulled out an object from his pocket and said “I got a knife.” According to the report, the victim feared for his life, so he ran to the nearby Tom Thumb and called 911.

Gomez admitted to pulling a knife on the victim, but continued to state it was the victim who started the altercation. The victim was able to provide a matching description of the knife.

Gomez was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held on a $25,000 bond.
