Liquid evidence leads to hit-and-run arrest

A Key West man was arrested on Monday after he allegedly crashed into several trash cans, damaged another vehicle and then left a trail of liquid that led from the scene of the crash to where he parked his car several blocks away.

Reinier Caldentey Abrines, 34, was charged with reckless driving and leaving the scene of a crash.

Key West Police Department officers responded to the corner of Simonton and Eaton streets after receiving reports of a suspicious incident. At the scene, officers discovered seven damaged trash cans scattered across the roadway, with one of the cans pinned underneath a nearby Ford Mustang. The Ford had damage to the front bumper and the driver’s side mirror was torn off, according to the report. Officers estimated the total damage to the car and trash cans was approximately $10,000.

While examining the scene, officers noted that a trail of liquid lead away from the Ford back toward Simonton Street. Officers began to follow the liquid, with the trail ending on Elizabeth and Dey streets near a parked Kia Forte. Upon closer inspection, the Kia had significant damage to the front and driver’s side.

A records check revealed the Kia belonged to Abrines, and the officers went to his listed address to make contact with him, according to the report. Once they arrived, they found Abrines asleep next to his front door. When asked how he got home, Abrines reportedly said he fell asleep while driving his vehicle, and then later said he walked home.

Abrines was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held on a bond of $50,000.

Information in the Crime Report is obtained from reports provided by area law enforcement agencies.
