A Stock Island man was arrested Sunday after he allegedly crashed his truck into another vehicle and ran from the scene in a DUI/hit-and-run incident.

Juan Antonio Camejo Prieto, 31, was charged with DUI, two counts of DUI with property damage and hit-and-run.

Around 3 a.m., a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputy was on patrol near 5th Avenue on Stock Island when he spotted a silver pickup traveling toward him in the middle of the two-lane road, with the deputy having to move his patrol car to the shoulder to avoid being hit. The pickup passed the deputy and made a quick right turn onto Robyn Lane, leading the deputy to pursue it by going to the next intersection and attempting to cut off the driver, according to the report.

However, by the time the deputy made it around the corner, the pickup had already traveled the entire length of Robyn Lane and crashed into a parked car at the Sunny Isle Trailer Park. As the deputy pulled up, he saw the suspect running away from the scene toward 3rd Avenue.

The deputy was able to find the suspect, later identified as Camejo Prieto, approximately 300 yards away from the crash. He immediately noticed the smell of alcohol and signs of intoxication on Camejo, according to the report.

Camejo Prieto stated he hit some trees but was unaware that he struck another vehicle. He consented to a field sobriety test, but ultimately failed each component. He was then arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where his breath sample came back as .184 BAC.

Camejo Prieto remained in jail as of Tuesday, where he was being held on a bail of $4,000.

Information in the Crime Report is obtained from reports provided by area law enforcement agencies.
