Man arrested after nearly hitting deputy with truck

An Ocean Reef, Florida man was arrested Thursday after he nearly crashed into a deputy on the side of the road and then fled the scene.

Brandon Nicholas Brock, 19, was charged with reckless driving. Brock was additionally cited for speeding and failure to move or slow down for an emergency vehicle.

Around 5:20 p.m., a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was on the shoulder of County Road 905 for an unrelated traffic stop when a white truck drove by in the right lane, within a foot of striking the deputy. The deputy estimated the vehicle was traveling approximately 60 mph in a 45 mph zone.

The deputy followed the truck, which came to a stop at the CR 905/Card Sound Road three-way intersection but then quickly accelerated to a speed of 85 mph in a 50 mph zone. The deputy pursued the truck toward Ocean Reef.

The deputy found the truck at a residence on South Harbor Drive, and noted the engine was emitting a distinct smell from being run hard and ticking as it cooled down.

The deputy confronted Brock at the home, and Brock initially denied driving the truck. He admitted after the deputy said he would obtain surveillance footage from the Ocean Reef gate, which confirmed Brock was the driver, according to MCSO.

Brock was taken to the Plantation Key jail, where he was being held without bond.

Woman arrested for allegedly selling opioids

A Marathon woman was arrested Thursday for selling oxycontin following an undercover operation conducted by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Maragert Jean Suarez, 38, was charged with two counts of selling an opium derivative within 1,000 feet of a church and two counts usage of a two-way communication device to facilitate a felony. She was later charged with possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, possession of paraphernalia and possession of cocaine.

Two undercover buy operations, conducted on April 12 and April 16, led to Suarez’s arrest. In both cases, Sheriff’s Office detectives used a confidential informant to purchase prescription oxycontin pills from Suarez, according to the police report.

In each purchase, the informant would meet with Suarez in Marathon, where they would buy the pills. Both sales took place within 1,000 feet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Marathon. The first purchase was six 30 mg Oxycontin pills for $210, and the second purchase was two pills for $80.

Oxycontin is a schedule II narcotic and one of the main contributing prescription pills in the ongoing national opioid crisis, according to the National Institute for Drug Abuse.

The reports regarding the cocaine and paraphernalia charges were not immediately available.

Suarez was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where she was being held on a bond of $145,000.

Brawling with bouncers results in man’s arrest

A Piedmont, South Dakota man was arrested Saturday after he allegedly began trying to fight bouncers at a gentleman’s club on Duval Street.

Kasey Dale Opp, 26, was charged with brawling and resisting an officer without violence.

Around 3:54 a.m., Key West Police Department officers responded to Teasers after being advised a man was trying to fight bouncers at the club. Officers arrived to find two Teasers staff members holding down the suspect, later identified as Opp.

Officers moved to handcuff Opp but he began to pull away, leading officers to forcefully place his arms behind his back, according to the report. Once he was detained, officers spoke with witnesses to determine what happened.

The officers reviewed surveillance footage from the bar, which showed employees asking Opp to leave over the course of several minutes. Opp ultimately made a fist and swung at a bouncer, although he missed, according to the report. From there, he went outside and stayed on the porch area, where he again refused to leave.

At some point, Opp swung again at one of the bouncers, but the employee was able to block it. From there, the bouncer grabbed Opp and held his arms to his side to prevent him from trying to punch the bouncer again, according to the report.

Opp was transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held on a bond of $15,000.

A literal hit-and-run lands SI man in jail

A Stock Island man was arrested Sunday after he allegedly crashed his truck into another vehicle and ran from the scene in a DUI/hit-and-run incident.

Juan Antonio Camejo Prieto, 31, was charged with DUI, two counts of DUI with property damage and hit-and-run.

Around 3 a.m., a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputy was on patrol near 5th Avenue on Stock Island when he spotted a silver pickup traveling toward him in the middle of the two-lane road, with the deputy having to move his patrol car to the shoulder to avoid being hit. The pickup passed the deputy and made a quick right turn onto Robyn Lane, leading the deputy to pursue it by going to the next intersection and attempting to cut off the driver, according to the report.

However, by the time the deputy made it around the corner, the pickup had already traveled the entire length of Robyn Lane and crashed into a parked car at the Sunny Isle Trailer Park. As the deputy pulled up, he saw the suspect running away from the scene toward 3rd Avenue.

The deputy was able to find the suspect, later identified as Camejo Prieto, approximately 300 yards away from the crash. He immediately noticed the smell of alcohol and signs of intoxication on Camejo, according to the report.

Camejo Prieto stated he hit some trees but was unaware that he struck another vehicle. He consented to a field sobriety test, but ultimately failed each component. He was then arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where his breath sample came back as .184 BAC.

Camejo Prieto remained in jail as of Tuesday, where he was being held on a bail of $4,000.

Illegal contracting results in charges

A Cutler Bay, Florida man was arrested Tuesday for doing contract work without a license after a woman reported that he failed to finish the repair work he was paid to do.

Alfonso Allen De La Cosa was charged with engaging in a contracting business without a certificate.

The victim explained to Monroe County Sheriff’s Office detectives that she hired De La Cosa last fall to perform $10,359 in hurricane window and door repair work, according to MCSO. The victim gave De La Cosa her credit card information and agreed to purchase more windows and doors, which De La Cosa was supposed to sell. He promised the victim that she would make a profit off of this side venture.

However, workers eventually stopped showing up to her residence, and the work was left unfinished. Simultaneously, at least an additional $30,000 was charged to the woman’s account.

Detectives contacted state regulators, who in turn provided proof that De La Cosa was not legally licensed to perform the work. Detectives continued investigating and eventually obtained a warrant for De La Cosa’s arrest.

Deputies booked De La Cosa into jail, but he was released the same day after posting his $15,000 bond.

The victim stated she would be pursuing civil action against De La Cosa regarding the charges to her credit card.

Woman arrested for ‘collection’ of drugs

A Miami woman in protective custody at the Guidance/Care Center in Marathon was arrested Monday on various drug possession charges after an employee reported finding a large number of drugs in her personal belongings.

Dai Trang Thi Ho, 38, was charged with possession of amphetamine, possession of marijuana over 20 grams, possession of cocaine over 28 grams and three counts of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription.

Around 2 p.m., Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the center, where a nurse turned over the narcotics. An employee told deputies that the nurse found the drugs while taking an inventory of Ho’s possessions, according to the police report. Inside Ho’s bag were 104.4 grams of cocaine, 5.9 grams of crack cocaine, 11.9 grams of amphetamine, 5.8 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, .2 grams of LSD and 137.5 grams of marijuana and marijuana brownies.

Deputies returned to the center on Tuesday to speak with Ho after she was released. Ho stated she was given the drugs from various people along her travels, according to the report. She also added that she never had any intentions of selling the drugs, only to “collect” them. Deputies pointed out that it was still a crime to possess the drugs, and Ho replied that she didn’t know that.

Deputies arrested Ho and transported her to the Monroe County Detention Center, where she was being held with a bond of $60,000.

Ho was taken to the center on Sunday after a car she was driving was towed and she made remarks to a towing company employee, prompting that employee to worry about her well-being, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Woman charged with jewelry theft

A Big Coppitt Key woman was arrested on a warrant Friday after investigators allege she stole jewelry from a friend’s mother.

Trisha Monique Suarez, 29, was charged with grand theft and violation of probation.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a home in Marathon after the homeowner filed a report that two women stole approximately $3,200 worth of jewelry from the home. The victim’s son reportedly invited the two women, one of whom was Suarez, to the house on April 26. The following morning, the victim discovered her jewelry drawer was open and numerous items were missing.

The son of the victim said he allowed Suarez and the other woman inside the house while he changed clothes. One of the women said she needed a drink and was left unattended. The son later dropped off the women and went to work in Key West. After his mother confronted him about the missing jewelry, the son tried to contact the two women. Suarez denied taking anything, but the second woman told the son that Suarez had the jewelry. The woman was even able to identify what type of jewelry had been stolen, according to the report.

The son later talked to Suarez’s aunt, who confirmed both women were involved in taking the jewelry.

Deputies secured a warrant for Suarez on May 21 and arrested her on Friday. She was booked into the Monroe County Detention Center, where she was being held on a bond of $75,000.

2 facing charges of illegal harvest

MARATHON — Two Melbourne, Florida men were charged recently with a litany of lobster-related crimes.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Marine Deputy Wilfredo Guerra was patrolling behind Coast Guard Station Marathon earlier this month on a Yamaha WaveRunner when he observed two men spearfishing without a dive flag near an inflatable boat.

Guerra conducted a stop and identified the men as Lance O’Conner Rossbach, 19, and Clay Matthew Kerr, 22, both of Melbourne, reports say.

The deputy asked to inspect their catch, and Kerr pulled five wrung lobster tails from the pocket of his shorts, reports state. Three of the lobster were undersized. All had been speared.

Rossbach reached into his pocket and produced two wrung lobster tails, reports say. One of the lobster were undersized. Both had been speared.

The men were charged with possession of out-of-season lobster, undersized lobster, speared lobster, wrung lobster tails in the water and no measuring device in the water while harvesting lobster.

They were taken to jail. The lobster tails were returned to the water.

Big Pine man gets arrested on birthday

A Big Pine Key man was arrested on Sunday after he allegedly created a scene outside of Starbucks on Front Street, hid from police and was later found to be in possession of cocaine.

Sean Michael Wilson, 21, was charged with disorderly conduct, possession of cocaine and resisting an officer without violence.

Around 2:15 a.m., Key West Police Department officers responded to Front Street after reports of a man with no shirt acting erratically. Officers arrived and found the suspect, later identified as Wilson, but he ran and hid in the bushes near Kino Plaza on Fitzpatrick Street, according to the report.

Officers located and attempted to detain him, although Wilson tried to roll away and refused to give the officers his hands. Eventually, they handcuffed him and they placed him in the patrol car. Wilson continued to act erratically, yelling that it was his birthday (it was) and that he was going to jail, according to the report.

While getting his ID out of his wallet, a small baggie reportedly fell out with .2 grams of cocaine. At this point, Wilson stated he would not answer any questions and wanted a lawyer. Officers discovered Wilson is on felony probation for burglary of an occupied conveyance, and a special condition of his probation is “no alcohol and no illegal drugs.”

Wilson was booked into jail, where he was being held without bond.

KW man arrested for having cocaine, ‘2C’

A Key West man was arrested Friday for drug possession after police conducted a search warrant at his home at the Stadium Mobile Home Park.

Mohammed Masudur Rahman, 31, was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia.

Around 6:30 a.m., the Key West Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit executed a search warrant at the Stadium on 14th Street, with assistance from Homeland Security Investigations and Drug Enforcement Administration personnel.

Detectives conducted a search of Rahman’s trailer, where they found a plastic baggie that field-tested positive for cocaine on the floor of his bedroom. A search of a locked file cabinet revealed nine empty plastic baggies and two baggies containing a “pink, rock-like substance” that field-tested positive for cocaine and 2C. Additionally, numerous identifying documents bearing Rahman’s name were found in the file cabinet.

Rahman initially denied knowing about the drugs, stating he recently held a party and someone might have left them, according to the report. When detectives pointed out the drugs were found in a locked file cabinet near documents bearing his name, Rahman reportedly said “If you found something, I’m sorry.”

Rahman was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, but he was released the following day.

The drug 2C, which comes in several variations such as “2C-B” and “2C-I,” is a psychedelic phenethylamine similar to MDMA, according to the DEA.

Man charged with burglary, mischief

A Key West man was arrested on Saturday after he reportedly confessed to stealing from his former employer.

Raymond Jeremiah Tardiff, 42, was charged with burglary of an unoccupied structure and criminal mischief in excess of $200.

Around 9:45 a.m., Key West Police Department officers responded to Gulfstream Fishing on North Roosevelt after the owner reportedly the business had been burglarized the previous night. The owner said one of her employees alerted her to the break-in when he arrived at work that morning and found a shed had been forced open, according to the report.

After checking the cash register, which was stored in the shed, the employee found that $600 had been stolen. The owner reviewed security footage, which depicted a man unsuccessfully attempting to open a combination lock on the shed. Unable to open the lock, the man rocked the door to the shed up and down until it was forced open, according to the report. The owner added that she believed the suspect was Tardiff, her former employee.

Officers encountered Tardiff later that day during a traffic stop, and he spontaneously mentioned the burglary, according to the report. After detaining him, Tardiff requested that the business owner come to the scene so he could explain why he committed the burglary. The owner arrived, and Taridff “immediately confessed” that he was responsible for the theft. The owner replied by saying, “Lock him up.”

Officers arrested Tardiff and transported him to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held on a bond of $7,500.

Man charged with drug possession

An Atlantic Beach, Florida man was arrested on Tuesday after police searched a Key West residence and located several drugs in his possession.

James Michael Moody, 35, was charged with possession of paraphernalia and three counts possession of a controlled substance.

Around 4:40 a.m., Key West Police Department Special Response Team officers executed a search warrant at a residence in the 400 block of Bahama Street. Officers detained the various occupants and searched them. As a result of the search, officers found a small bag containing cocaine and MDMA in Moody’s pocket, according to the report.

Further search of the property revealed two oxycodone pills, a small digital scale with cocaine residue and mail addressed to Moody in a suitcase.

Officers arrested Moody and transported him to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held on a $70,000 bond.

KW teacher charged with theft of orchids

A Key West teacher was arrested on Thursday after she allegedly stole several orchids from an Islamorada resort earlier in the month.

Jessica Diane Wood, 40, was charged with burglary of an unoccupied structure and petit theft.

Wood’s arrest came after an investigation into a theft that started on June 11, when Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Moorings Village resort in Islamorada. A security guard and manager reported that a woman was caught on camera climbing over a fence and into a plant nursery, where she stole eight orchid plants, according to the report.

A review of security footage showed a woman climb the fence while an unidentified driver backs an SUV up to the fence line, according to the report. Several employees and witnesses at the resort were able to identify Wood, knowing her either as their former high school teacher or from her employment at the nearby Fisher Inn Resort, according to the report.

Deputies met with Wood, who said she hadn’t been to Moorings Village in approximately five years. However, once confronted with the video evidence, Wood reportedly admitted to trespassing on the property and stealing the orchids. The next day, an orchid arrangement with a card was left on the property with an apology note signed by Wood. Wood confirmed her sister dropped the flowers off for her. Despite this, deputies obtained a warrant for her arrest.

Wood was arrested and transported to the Plantation Key jail, but she was released the same day after posting her $10,000 bond.

While the police report lists Wood as a teacher at Coral Shores High School, she is listed on the directory of Key West High School. A spokesperson for the Monroe County School District was not immediately available for comment.

Marathon fish house employee arrested

A Marathon man was arrested on Friday after he allegedly threatened co-workers with a fillet knife before stripping naked and passing out while still on the property.

Adianel Torna Morales, 46, was charged with disorderly intoxication, damaging property in excess of $1,000, resisting an officer with violence and battery on law enforcement officers.

Around 5:15 p.m., Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Nichols Seafood of Conch Key after reports came in of an intoxicated and disorderly person, according to MCSO. The deputies arrived and met with an employee who told them that a co-worker, identified as Torna Morales, had been drinking at work. The employee said Torna Morales damaged security cameras, including spraying one camera with spray paint, and then grabbed a fillet knife.

Employees were unable to take the knife from Torna Morales, and he eventually stripped naked, began walking around the property and ultimately passed out in the business office.

Deputies found Torna Morales naked and asleep in the office. When they tried to wake him up to get dressed, Torna Morales reportedly cursed at the deputies and attempted to slam the door. Torna Morales was warned he would be shocked with a stun gun, and he motioned as if he was going to grab something, according to the report. Deputies then had him exit the office at gunpoint.

Torna Morales continued to resist, kicking deputies as he was being placed in a patrol car, which eventually led deputies to use a stun gun on him. Torna Morales was booked into the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held on a $45,000 bond.

Man charged with aggravated battery

A Palm Beach Gardens man was arrested on Sunday after he allegedly threw a glass beer bottle into an adult entertainment club after being kicked out.

Andrew Jacob Arce, 29, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, throwing a missile into a building and resisting an officer without violence.

Around 1:45 a.m., Key West Police Department officers on foot patrol near the 200 block of Duval Street heard a beer bottle break nearby. The officers noticed a security guard pointing toward the direction of Sloppy Joe’s bar at a man. One officer ran toward the suspect, later identified as Arce, while the other spoke with security staff, according to the report.

The security staff explained Arce had been kicked out of the Red Garter Saloon because he was causing unspecified issues. On his way out, Arce reportedly threw a beer bottle at the feet of security staff, with the bottle breaking on the security guard’s shoes.

Arce ran from the police, cut through an alley and eventually ended up on Front Street. The officers were able to apprehend him near the Boathouse Restaurant, but he continued to resist arrest by pulling away and refusing to place his hands on his back. Officers ultimately were able to handcuff him after warning him that they would use their stun guns, according to the report.

A review of security footage at the Rick’s complex confirmed the security staff’s narrative, and officers arrested Arce.

Arce was transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, but he was released later the same day.

Man arrested with stolen firearm, pot

A U.S. 1 traffic stop led to the arrest of a Merritt Island, Florida man on Friday after deputies discovered a stolen firearm and marijuana inside the vehicle.

Michael Christopher Ennis, 42, was charged with grand theft of a firearm, possession of marijuana, two counts possession of marijuana without a prescription and possession of paraphernalia.

Around 1 p.m., Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies spotted a truck with an obstructed license plate near Mile Marker 101 in Key Largo. Deputies pulled the vehicle over and met with the driver, identified as Ennis, who immediately stated he had a firearm in the car, according to the report.

Deputies had Ennis step out of the vehicle for a search of weapons on his person, and Ennis advised he had a concealed carry license, which the deputies confirmed. A subsequent search of his vehicle revealed a .40-caliber Springfield handgun and a Ruger .357 Magnum revolver, three marijuana cigars, marijuana-infused gummy worms, an electronic vape pen with THC oil and a marijuana grinder, according to the report.

After entering the two guns’ serial numbers in the Florida Crime Information Center/National Crime Information Center, the deputies determined the .357 revolver had been reported stolen out of Titusville, Florida. There no issues with the other firearm, according to the report.

Ennis was booked into the Plantation Key jail, but he was released the next day.

Stolen equipment, ID lead to arrest

A homeless man was arrested Monday after he allegedly attempted to pawn stolen dive and spearfishing equipment.

John Christopher Phillips, 41, was charged with burglary, grand theft, dealing in stolen property and possession of stolen property.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Joe’s Marathon Pawn shop after the shop contacted them and reported their suspicion that the merchandise Phillips was attempting to pawn was stolen, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Phillips left his ID and all the stolen equipment at the pawn shop before he left, reportedly because he was upset that they wouldn’t make the sale.

The equipment was reportedly stolen sometime on Sunday night or early Monday morning from a vehicle parked at the Brass Monkey Bar. Phillips loaded the gear into a Winn-Dixie shopping cart that he also stole, according to the Sheriff’s Office. A sticker on one of the spearguns allowed deputies to contact the rightful owner of the equipment on Monday, and the owner had not yet realized his vehicle had been burglarized. All equipment was subsequently returned to the victim.

Deputies located Phillips near the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Marathon, where he was arrested.

Phillips was booked into jail, where he was being held without bond.

Traffic stop leads to crack cocaine arrest

A Sugarloaf Key woman was arrested on Wednesday after deputies found crack cocaine in her vehicle during a traffic stop.

Michelle Calvo-Gonzalez, 54, was charged with possession of cocaine and possession of paraphernalia.

Around 11:15 p.m., a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputy was on patrol on U.S. 1 when he saw a car drift off the roadway and onto the grass section of the shoulder before it swerved back into the lane and continued northbound. The deputy pulled over the vehicle and met with the driver, identified as Calvo-Gonzalez, and explained that he was making sure she was OK.

The deputy noted that she appeared anxious and unsteady. When asked there was anything illegal in the car, Calvo-Gonzalez replied “illegal, not that I would think, I just want to go home,” according to the report. The deputy called for a Key West Police Department K9 unit, which alerted to the presence of narcotics when it arrived.

During a search of the vehicle, the deputy found two pieces of suspected crack cocaine underneath the driver’s seat, two pill bottles with numerous pieces of suspected crack cocaine and a glass pipe that is “commonly used to smoke crack cocaine” with residue on it, according to the report.

The deputy arrested Calvo-Gonzalez and transported her to the Monroe County Detention Center, where she was being held without bond.

Man swinging oar faces assault charge

A Marathon man was arrested Thursday on a warrant after he allegedly swung an oar at his neighbor and another man earlier in the month.

Leosvel Parrado Cordova, 42, was charged with two counts aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.

Around 8:40 p.m. on Monday, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Boot Key Harbor in Marathon after receiving a report of a potential battery. The deputies met with the victim, a woman and man, who stated they were cleaning the woman’s boat when the woman’s neighbor rowed up next to them in a dinghy, according to the report.

The victims said the neighbor, later identified as Cordova, started shouting and making jokes. He then allegedly said “That’s my girl and I’ll get you,” according to the report. From there, the victims said Cordova swung a fiberglass oar at the two victims, with the woman adding she could feel the wind from the oar as it went by.

The oar missed both victims, but broke when it struck the boat and the splinters from the oar struck the woman, according to the report. The victims later identified Cordova, whom the woman knew only as her neighbor “Leosvel.”

Cordova was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held on a bond of $20,000.

Deputies arrest 2 after finding guns and drugs

A 16-year-old and an 18-year-old were arrested last week after deputies found two handguns and marijuana in a car in Key Largo.

Luke Eric Townsend, 18, of Tavernier, was charged with possession of a marijuana vape pen without a prescription and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The 16-year-old male Key Largo resident was charged with possession of a concealed firearm without a valid concealed carry license, possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana and possession of marijuana paraphernalia (a pipe).

Around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputy received a call about a suspicious vehicle with several juveniles who appeared to be doing drugs near Newport Village in Key Largo. Two deputies responded to the area, where they found five males ranging from ages 16 to 19.

After noting the smell of marijuana, the deputies asked all five to exit the vehicle. A search of the car revealed a loaded .38-caliber semi-automatic pistol, a loaded .380-caliber revolver, a marijuana vape pen, a small amount of marijuana and a small glass water pipe.

A 17-year-old told deputies that the group had been smoking a joint prior to arrival. The 16-year-old who was arrested was the driver of the vehicle, and he also claimed ownership of the .38-caliber pistol, saying he found it in the Everglades several weeks ago. Townsend claimed the revolver and pen.

Townsend and the 16-year-old were taken to jail where both the 16-year-old’s parents and the Department of Juvenile Justice were notified. The 16-year-old was placed in the custody of the DJJ.
