TAVERNIER — A teenager accused of pointing a gun at a man in a car who just dropped off his child at Key Largo School Thursday morning was arrested, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Douglas Keashawn Mills, 19, of Tavernier, was charged with aggravated assault, improper exhibition of a firearm and displaying a weapon while committing a felony.

The motorist called the Sheriff’s Office at 8:15 a.m. to report he was driving in his car when a man in another car pointed a gun at him, reports say.

Deputy Gil Gonzalez was on patrol in Key Largo when he heard a notice to be-on-the-lookout for a black Dodge Charger southbound from the school. He began to look for the vehicle. A short time later, Sgt. Syd Whitehouse spotted the car at Miler Marker 101. The sergeant pulled the vehicle over and Deputy Gonzalez responded to back him up.

There were three people in the car. Mills was in the back seat and matched the description of the person who pointed the gun, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Near where he was sitting in the car, the officers found a black and tan backpack with a black semi-automatic pistol inside, reports say.

It was not loaded, but a live round was on the back seat. The two other people in the car with Mills said the bag belonged to him, but they didn’t know he had a gun, reports say.

Mills was taken to the Monroe County Detention Center on Plantation Key.
