The Key West Police Department arrested a Key West man on Tuesday after he stole an alcoholic beverage from the Sunset Marina Ships Store and then pulled a knife on a bystander trying to stop him.
Damien Marshaall Baughman, 37, entered the store just before noon, grabbed a Mike’s Harder Lemonade from a cooler and then entered the bathroom. Baughman then left the bathroom, without the beverage in hand, and exited the store without paying for anything, reports state.
According to the report, the bystander attempted to stop Baughman from leaving, but Baughman pulled out a red folding knife and began to open it. The bystander then hit the knife out of his hand and took it, simultaneously putting Baughman in a head lock and holding him on the ground until law enforcement arrived.
Baughman told officers that he was pulling the knife out to try and trade it as payment for the beverage.
Baughman is being charged with petit theft and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Officers transported Baughman to the Monroe County Detention Center without any issues.
