The Key West Police Department arrested two men on Thursday following a fight in their apartment in which one man held a knife to the throat of the other.

Around 9:53 p.m., officers responded to a report of a physical disturbance at Oceanwalk Apartments, where they met with Colin Blaine Romine, 31, and Kyle Francis Cowan, 25. According to the report, the two have been in a domestic partnership for three years, and have been living together for two years. After arguing over walking their dogs, the two got into a physical confrontation that started when Cowan threw a laundry basket at the back of Romine’s head, according to the report.

Things escalated further when Romine and Cowan began throwing punches at each other. Romine said that Cowan swung a decorative wooden boat at him, and then grabbed a knife from a butcher block in the kitchen. Cowan then placed the knife against Romine’s neck and said “I’m going to end your life,” according to the police report. At some point in the altercation, Cowan said Romine struck him with a chair and then pinned him to the ground.

Officers observed marks consistent with all of the alleged attacks on both men, but officers were unable to determine who the main aggressor was. Therefore, both subjects were arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center. Cowan was transported to the Lower Keys Medical Center prior to jail, but he denied needing any medical attention.

Romine was charged with battery, while Cowan was charged with battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
