According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, a 33-year-old Fort Myers man was arrested Monday for stealing hundreds of dollars from a Tavernier-based plumbing business owner in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.

Wisnel Hernandez Sanchez was charged with larceny, fraud and passing a counterfeit check.

Ernesto Moreno Aguiar of Miami-Dade County was arrested last week on the same charges.

The victim reported the case in October. He stated a former employee, whom he hired to do work in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, had stolen personal checks from him. That suspect then distributed them to other men on the mainland, including those arrested, said Upper Keys Det. Jacques Rozek. Several of the banks where the suspects deposited the checks helped in the investigation. The checks included one written for $6,500 by Aguiar and another for $700 from Sanchez. One bank was able to stop the cashing of the $6,500 check.

Security footage at multiple banks was reviewed. Both Sanchez and Aguiar were identified. Upon further investigation, warrants were issued for the arrest of both with a $30,000 bail.

Both remained in jail Tuesday.

More arrests may be pending.
