A Key West man was arrested on Monday after officers found him behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle near McCoy Indigenous Park on White Street.
Don Raymond Cordell, Jr., 39, was charged with grand theft auto and possession of marijuana.
Around 10:49 p.m., Key West Police Department officers responded to the 1000 block of Duval Street after receiving a report of a stolen vehicle. Officers met with the victim, who stated that he was in an ice cream shop with his wife when he looked out the window of the shop and saw his Mercedes-Benz sedan driving away from the area.
According to the report, the victim began to chase the vehicle on foot, and he was able to maintain a visual on the car’s location until the car reached Truman Avenue and White Street. He also provided a description of the suspect.
Officers found Cordell with the vehicle and took him into custody, and the victim positively identified him as the suspect. Prior to detaining him, officers located marijuana in Cordell’s front pocket. However, Cordell appeared to fall asleep while officers were reading him his Miranda Rights, leading them to transport him to the emergency room for medical clearance.
Cordell was medically cleared and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held on a $27,500 bond.
