A Miami man’s broken tail light, and his inability to maintain his lane while driving, resulted in him being arrested for DUI on Thursday.

Roberto Marte, 57, was charged with DUI with a blood-alcohol level over .20.

Around 9:08 p.m., Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies spotted a Toyota sedan driving northbound on U.S. 1 near Marathon with a broken tail light. Furthermore, the driver was following too closely to the next vehicle and weaving in and out of the traffic lane.

Deputies pulled over the vehicle, where they met with the driver, identified as Marte. According to the report, Marte didn’t acknowledge the deputies initially, as he was busy applying deodorant to his hands and clothing. Throughout the traffic stop, deputies noted that Marte would repeatedly move his hands towards his mouth, as if he was trying to mask an odor of some kind.

According to the report, Marte’s speech was continuously slurred, and his eyes were bloodshot and glassy. Combined with his driving pattern, deputies determined he was likely intoxicated. Marte agreed to perform a field sobriety test, but ultimately failed each component. After being transported to the Marathon DUI room, Marte blew a .242 blood-alcohol level.

Marte was transported to the Monroe County Detention Center, where he was being held on a bond of $15,000.

Information in the Crime Report is obtained from reports provided by area law enforcement agencies.
