MARATHON — A man staying at a hotel due to Hurricane Irma went on a drunken tirade Sunday screaming profanities at the resort bar as well as using racial slurs at black employees before being dragged off to jail where he threatened and cursed at arresting deputies, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Darryl Arthur Bergeron, 54, was charged with felony threats to a law enforcement officer, trespassing, disturbing the peace and resisting arrest. The remaining three are misdemeanors. Sunday was his 12th arrest in Monroe County.

Deputies were called to the Banana Bay Resort, 4590 Overseas Highway, Marathon, where employees there told them Bergeron was staying with the aid of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and had been a “problem guest” due to frequent noise complaints, reports say.

He often appeared drunk at the bar and ran other guests off, workers said, and had been complaining as of late about a $50 hold the hotel put on his bank card, reports say. He used foul language to describe several female workers, including a black clerk whom he repeatedly called a racial slur.

Deputies went to Bergeron’s room to evict him and he began screaming at them and so began a long route to jail in which he reportedly resisted deputies at every opportunity.

He screamed and yelled at nurses and doctors at Fishermen’s Hospital before going to jail and while en route to jail made often bizarre insults to deputies, including one who he called a, “… loser who pees his pants because his father never showed him love,” reports say.

Bergeron remained at the Monroe County Detention Center on Stock Island Tuesday in lieu of $16,000 bail.

Information in the Crime Report is obtained from reports provided by area law enforcement agencies.
